A PRIVATE, PERSONALIZED PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE

The Work Beneath the Scene

Photographing Maui isn’t about the scene — it’s about the work beneath it.
The awareness.
The intention.
The quiet intensity that builds when you slow down, look closely, and meet a place with your full attention.

The island rewards that kind of approach — the discipline of staying with a composition, refining your decisions, and creating something that carries more than just a record of what was there.
Here, the process becomes part of the photograph, and the experience becomes just as meaningful as the image.

This is a private, one-on-one workshop where I guide you through a clearer, more intentional way of working in the field.
You’ll learn to see with more precision, make stronger decisions, and understand how to shape a photograph from the ground up.

The pace is steady and focused, giving you the time and space you need to grow — supported by guidance that meets you exactly where you are.

What We Work On

At the heart of this workshop is learning to photograph with awareness — the kind that sharpens your decision-making, clarifies your compositions, and brings more depth and presence into the work you create.

We explore how to slow down and stay with a scene long enough to understand what it can become.
How to build a photograph with intention rather than reacting to whatever is in front of you.
How to see relationships between elements, and how to use space, light, and timing to shape mood and expression.

We work through the foundation of strong exposures — both optimal and creative — and how each choice influences the feeling of the final image.
Long exposure becomes a tool of intention here: a way to simplify, refine, and create photographs with clarity, spaciousness, and mood.

Throughout the session, we draw on guiding principles that strengthen your compositions — practical ways of seeing that help you create cleaner, more confident images in the field.

This is the kind of work that stays with you long after the workshop ends.

Working on Location

Each session begins with a single guiding question:
How can you create photographs that feel more compelling, more evocative, and more personal?

That question shapes the way I guide the day.
Light, tide, wind, clouds, and the overall conditions determine where we go and how we work — always with the goal of giving you the strongest opportunities to create meaningful images.

Every location we work in is chosen with intention — selected for the conditions, the potential, and the kind of photographic possibilities it offers.

The result is a session that feels clear, grounded, and thoughtfully paced — a focused approach that gives you the time and space to work with real intention.

Why Learn From Me

For more than two decades, I’ve worked as a full-time fine art landscape photographer here in Hawaii, building a long-exposure portfolio collected internationally by private collectors, professional athletes, Fortune 500 executives, and luxury hotels like the Four Seasons and Grand Wailea.
This depth of experience is what I bring into every workshop.

My approach is quiet and direct.
I teach through clarity and intention — helping you understand how to slow down, work with awareness, refine your decisions, and build a photograph with purpose.

Over 350 private workshops have shaped how I guide each session.
I know the challenges photographers face in the field, the blind spots they often miss, and the practical steps that help them create stronger, more personal images.

My goal isn’t just to help you make better photographs on Maui — it’s to strengthen the way you work, so you can create meaningful images anywhere you go.

From Past Participants

“You connected me to the deeper elements of immersive photography, and what it means to be passionate about the entire process—not just what happens in-camera.”

— Kurt Van Cleef, Vancouver, Washington

“He has helped me see what makes a successful image—not just the basics, but how to impart passion and feeling into photography.””

— Karen Wellman, Eugene, Oregon

“I honestly believe my photography skills grew 100x after my workshop with Scott. His passion, experience, and knowledge of photography are extremely valuable. I walked away with some amazing images, but more importantly, new confidence and direction in my work. I highly recommend investing in one of his workshops.”

— Ryan Waddell, Sacramento, California
