FAQ — San Francisco Photo Workshop
If you’re considering joining the San Francisco Photo Workshop, this page covers the most common questions — from gear and logistics to what you can expect in the field. If anything isn’t covered here, feel free to reach out.
Why choose this workshop?
This is a small-group photography workshop designed around process, observation, and decision-making in the field.
We’ll work slowly along San Francisco’s coastal and urban edges, using winter light and quieter conditions to simplify scenes and focus on long exposure, composition, and intent. My role is to help you refine how you see, how you choose, and how you work — not to rush from location to location or replicate my images.
If you value depth over volume and want to strengthen your photographic process, this workshop is built for that.
When do I pay?
A 50% deposit secures your spot.
The remaining balance is due on the date listed on the workshop page, typically about two months before the workshop begins.
You’ll receive a confirmation email after payment.
If you don’t receive it within 48 hours, reach out with your order number and I’ll confirm your booking directly.
What gear should I bring?
You don’t need everything you own.
A simple, thoughtful kit works best.
Recommended lenses:
16–35mm
24–70mm (or 24–105mm)
A 70–200mm is optional and situational
Required:
A stable tripod
A wired cable release (essential for long exposures)
After you book, we can talk 1:1 to make sure your kit is well-suited for this workshop.
Should I bring ND filters?
Yes.
Long exposure is a core part of how we’ll work.
Bring:
3-stop
6-stop
10-stop ND filters for the lenses you plan to use
If you’re missing something critical, I can help you choose the right option or suggest rentals.
What else should I bring?
Comfortable walking shoes (we’ll be on our feet regularly)
Warm layers — mornings and evenings can be cool
A wind-resistant or rain-resistant jacket
San Francisco weather is variable by nature. Being comfortable allows you to stay focused.
Should I bring a laptop?
Optional.
I’ll have mine available for image review and discussion.
You’re welcome to bring yours if you prefer to work alongside me, or you can wait and review images once you’re home.
Both approaches work well.
Can I bring a spouse or non-photographer?
This workshop is designed exclusively for participating photographers and moves at a steady pace throughout the day. Because of that, there isn’t time or space to accommodate non-participants during workshop activities.
If your spouse or partner plans to visit San Francisco independently, that’s completely fine — but all shooting sessions, transportation, and group discussions are reserved for registered participants only.
What if the weather isn’t ideal?
We don’t cancel for typical coastal weather.
Overcast skies, fog, wind, and light rain are all part of San Francisco — and often create the most compelling photographic conditions. We’ll adapt our locations and timing as needed.
Flexibility is part of the process.
Will there be sunrise sessions?
Yes.
We’ll plan for early-morning sessions, as well as sunset and evening work when conditions align. There will also be downtime built into the schedule for rest and recovery.
What is your refund policy?
Please review the full Terms & Conditions for details regarding cancellations and refunds.
If you have questions after reading them, feel free to reach out.
